Fresh Mother’s Day Ideas

It’s a sure bet that most of us will pick up a bunch of roses or a spring bouquet at the grocery store this Saturday. And that’s a really nice Mother’s Day gift even though it doesn’t require a lot of planning or forethought.

Daisies for Mother's DayWhat if you really splurged this year and gave your mom something meaningful or maybe even thought provoking? Something that really speaks to how you feel. Maybe something that is a bit more sincere than just a bunch of daisies from the corner florist.

Mother’s day presents that matter

It may be late in the game to think of something really thoughtful but I was reminded by my own children how simple it is to give from the heart rather than the wallet.

My nine year old son brought home a handmade bookmark from school today. He fashioned it out of some rough paper with a few simple designs encrusted with Elmer’s glue. The edges are a bit rough and the signature is written in the honest and simplistic hand of a nine year old. This handmade bookmark is certain to find it’s way into many of his mom’s books and better still will serve to remind her of his youthful effort to “be remembered.”

His sister, on the other hand, proudly arrived home with a beautifully hand-painted clay pot. This is her particular area of expertise. She has an incredible ability to capture the innocence of a child while emulating a gift that you might see in a garden center boutique at 50 dollars or more. And again her signature, which is scrawled across the bottom, will serve as a permanent reminder of her youthful and innocent years. It’s simply amazing.

Capturing handmade Mother’s Day art

As for me, I’ve taken a lesson from the resident experts with a handmade gift as well. You see, my wife was so taken by a story my son created earlier this year that I decided to re-work it into the video you see here. It’s a sweet story filled with magic and wonder. And when I asked him to read it into the microphone, there was no hesitation.

So there you have it. Maybe the story means more to us than it will to the world wide web, but perhaps it will inspire some to look in a new and different direction for a meaningful Mother’s Day celebration.

I hope you enjoy it. We would love to hear what you think so please leave your comments below.

Oops… I’ve lost track of the time and I want to stop by the grocery store to pick up some Mother’s Day petunias. Old habits die hard.
