Dad gets the shaft on Father’s Day

The unbalanced truth about Father’s Day presents

According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, the average shopper will spend about $94.32 on Dad this Father’s Day. That’s up from $90.89 last year. When it’s all said and done, U.S. consumers will spend approximately $9.8 billion on Dad this year.

One of my favorite Father's Day presents

But that’s considerably less than Mother’s Day gifting which totaled $14.6 billion on candy, flowers and jewelry for Mom. That’s approximately $126.90 per mom, up from $123.89 a year ago.

So although Father’s Day gifting is definitely on the rise, Dad just won’t get as much as Mom does on her special day.

What’s up with that?

Is it possible that Dad is harder to shop for? Is there a national shortage of Father’s Day ideas? What happened to the striped necktie and English Leather?

Our best Father’s Day ideas

Is it really that hard to find thoughtful Fathers Day presents? I don’t think so. There are plenty of on line gift idea finders. One of our favorites is Novica.com Dad gets the shaft on Fathers Day. Check out their weekly coupons and promotions Dad gets the shaft on Fathers Day.

Not only do they provide a terrific selection of hand made candle holder gifts, they also offer an exclusive and exotic collection of men’s jewelry, barware and men’s apparel. My personal favorite is their collection of inviting and relaxing hammocks.

I can’t imagine what father wouldn’t enjoy a Fathers Day snooze in one of these fabulous hanging respites. Just click on the hammock picture and you’ll be able to browse a variety of  luxury hammocks.

It’s your turn

Share your thoughts on your Fathers Day giving. Will it be the simplicity of sharing an orange with him on Sunday afternoon or arranging the experience of a fighter jet simulator joy ride.

Let us know what your planning for Dad this year.

And don’t worry about the Mom vs Dad cash discrepancy. In the final analysis, it truly is the thought that counts. Don’t you agree?

A special note of thanks to my daughter Cate who was brave enough to read the Father’s Day poem into a microphone for the video.  Her gift may end up being my favorite! Please post it on your own blog. Get the embed code at You Tube.

“The shaft” haha! It’s true. I asked for a set of golf clubs this year and my wife just laughed at me. Great post and good job on the reading, Cate.

Thanks David… Too bad about the golf clubs. A new set of would have blown the lid off of the Father’s Day spending controversy.
